Nickel Alloys 5. Magnesium Alloys. Steel Alloy:The steel alloys are, Nickel steel, Chromium steel, Manganese steel, Tungsten steel, Vanadium steel and Molybdenum steel. Nickel steel alloy has better elasticity, lesser brittleness and higher tensile strength. It also has greater ductility and hardness. It is used for making machine parts, shafts, boiler plates etc.
Alloy Steel: Properties and Use First-Principles Quantum Mechanical Approach to Stainless Steel Alloys 15 (a) (b) Fig. The (001) interfacial energy (in J m-2) between the Cr-rich α' phase (FexCr1-x) and the Fe-rich α phase (Fe1-yCry) for (a) ferromagnetic and (b) paramagnetic states. 4.3 Interfacial energies. Tin has been the most commonly used alloying element, but arsenic, antimony and lead have also been used. 4 - 2 Bronze with 11% tin, 50x magnification Bronze is a mixture of elements, not a compound, so in theory any proportions can be made. Bronze is harder than copper, making it useful for tools and weapons.
Steel containing 30 per cent nickel is called invar which has a low coefficient of thermal expansion.Chromium steel has greater ultimate strength. It is hard and tough. It is used for ball bearings, crushing machines, permanent magnets, razors, rolls for rolling mills, cutlery etc. This contains 1 to 2.5 percent chromium. If the percentage of chromium is high (12 per cent) the alloy is called stainless steel which is acid proof, stain proof and rust proof and is used for surgical instruments, utensils, ornamental fittings etc.
ADVERTISEMENTS:Manganese steel contains 2 per cent manganese and is hard and strong. It has high electrical resistance and is non-magnetic and has low coefficient of thermal expansion. This is used for heavy earthmoving equipment, jaws of crushers, railway tracks etc.Tungsten steel contains 5 to 7 per cent tungsten.
This is used for lathe tools, drills, chisels, cutters, reamers etc.Vanadium steel has higher tensile and yield strengths. It is used for high speed tools, locomotive castings, engine frames, chassis, crankshafts, axles, springs etc.Molybdenum steel contains 0.2 to 0.3 per cent molybdenum (often along with molybdenum, two more metals viz. Chromium and manganese are used). It has high tensile strength at high temperatures also. It is used for shafts, gears, axles, automobile and aero plane parts. Copper Alloys. ADVERTISEMENTS:Brass and Bronze are the important alloys of copper.
Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc (copper content 70 to 85 per cent). It resists corrosion well and can be rolled into sheets, turned into tubes, drawn into wires and cast into the desired shape.Brass added with some nickel becomes German silver or Nickel silver.Bronze is an alloy of mainly copper and tin. Gun metal, bell metal, phosphor bronze etc.
Are various varieties of bronze. Gun metal contains copper, tin and zinc.
Bell metal contains copper and tin. Phosphor bronze contains copper,-tin and phosphorous. Manganese bronze contains copper, manganese, aluminium, lead, iron and zinc, speculum metal contains copper, zinc. The various varieties of bronze have different uses.
They are used for making guns, bearings, bells, for underwater constructions, for shafts and axles etc. Aluminum Alloys. ADVERTISEMENTS:Monel Metal and nickel silver are the two nickel alloys. Monel metal contains copper and small quantity of nickel and other metals. Nickel silver or German silver contains copper (50 to 80 per cent), Zinc (10 to 35 per cent) and Nickel (5 to 30 per cent). It is very white and offers good resistance to corrosion. It is used for making scientific instruments and utensils.
Magnesium Alloys:Dow metal and Electron metal are alloys of magnesium. Dow metal contains magnesium (87 to 97 per cent) Aluminium (4 to 12 per cent) and Manganese (0.1 to 0.4 per cent). Electron metal contains magnesium (95 to 96 per cent), zinc (4 per cent), small quantities of iron, copper and silicon. These alloys are light.

or R.R. Alloys (2% copper, nickel): used in aircraft pistons. (up to 12% magnesium, 1% manganese): used in shipbuilding, resists seawater corrosion. (3.5% magnesium, 0.3% manganese): formerly used to make coinage of the Italian lira. (5-50% ): used in airplane bodies, ladders, pyrotechnics, etc. ( 40%, 10%), also called Nital. (4% copper, nickel, magnesium)also forms, like β–Al–Mg, ξ'–Al–Pd–Mn, and T–Al 3Mn.Beryllium.The purity of alloys is expressed in, (UK: carats) which indicates the of the minimum amount of gold (by ) over 24 parts total.

24 karat gold is (24/24 parts), and the engineering standard is that it be applied to alloys that have been refined to 99.9% or better purity ('3 nines fine'). There are, however, places in the world that allow the claim of 24kt. To alloys with as little as 99.0% gold ('2 nines fine' or 'point nine-nine fine). An alloy which is 14 parts gold to 10 parts alloy is 14 karat gold, 18 parts gold to 6 parts alloy is 18 karat, etc. This is becoming more commonly and more precisely expressed as a decimal fraction, i.e.: 14/24 equals.585 (rounded off), and 18/24 is.750 ('seven-fifty fine').There are hundreds of possible alloys and mixtures possible, but in general the addition of silver will color gold green, and the addition of copper will color it red. A mix of around 50/50 copper and silver gives the range of yellow gold alloys the public is accustomed to seeing in the marketplace. References.
