Warhammer 40k Terrain
Yup.You could go out and get a high quality home printer that can print semigloss two sided on thick paper for a couple hundred bucks and print out some TCG cards. You would need to know how to work at least a basic photo editing program to set it all up, and your cards might be called out.Right now you can spend a couple hundred bucks on a 3D printer, spend the time to learn how to use it without crazy issues. Spend the time to learn how to get basics of 3D modeling and then print your own stuff. Your models will be noticeable up close, and they will be harder to paint.Do people do either?
Sure, but only a small hand full. If 3D printers are ever a common home appliance in our lifetime, I still doubt we will see it hurt GW sales. They will mostly be used for custom minis and wargear, full armies though? That will be a lot of work.
Cards printed on high quality paper are often impossible to tell if they are duped or not. Especially when they are in card sleeves. The point is that getting fake cards is really easy and there's plenty of ways to obtain the prints. You can save yourself literally hundreds of dollars. Even still, real cards often retain their value. Jace the Mindbender a few years ago sold for $100 before it was banned. Most GW models do not work that way. It's not as easy to do with GW since we are dealing with a material a little more difficult to work with.
But 3D printing will hopefully make GW change their marketing. My guess is they won't, but I can hope. 40k models tend to hold value very very well, but GW has an insane upcharge on THEIR sell prices.I can go to GW store right now, and buy a Riptide for $85. Or I can go to eBay and buy the exact same Riptide, UNOPENED, for $60. It's not even out of the box and the price is already lowered.Cards are a poor comparison because the collectible and rare nature of cards themselves increase the value of those cards. Some MTG cards sell for thousands. The value of a GW model drops literally the moment it is purchased from GW's shelves.
